So this is global warming

The news today reports snow in 49 of the 50 states.  So this is global warming.

Folks on You Tube are finding some really funny stuff from a group calling itself Minnesotan’s 4 Global Warming (M4GW).  Their take on what is going on this winter is not quite politically correct, but it is a lot of fun.

We’ve got cold and blowing snow here again.  The winds are blowing at over 35 mph and the fresh snow is moving again.  Folks on the east coast are again digging out of the snow on a historically snowy winter.

I’ve never been sure there is such a thing as “Global Warming.”  I’ve always been much more of a scientist than anything else.  I try to keep up on what is going on in the scientific community.  What I was seeing on global weather conditions, before the whole global warming scare, showed me that we have been living in better than average conditions for many years.  Tree rings and ice cores showed dramatic changes in weather were the norm before the “modern” era.

The weather that Europe and the rest of the northern hemisphere has enjoyed during the industrial revolution was abnormally nice.  Thus we have come to expect the better than normal weather as the norm.

The method of calculating the average global temperature has come into light recently and leaves a bit of a problem.  Most of the temperatures were taken in larger cities.  As time has gone on cities have developed an urban heat island effect.  The heat of human activity in cities has increased the temperature in those areas over the temperatures in rural areas.

Are we losing glaciers?  Yes and no.  Some glaciers are retreating as the last remnants of the ice age retreat.  The retreat of these glaciers is releasing water that was frozen thousands of years ago.  Yet some glaciers are actually growing.

Are global temperatures still rising?  Actually since 2001 average global temps have fallen slightly.  We seem to have a problem here.

Do we believe those screaming global warming or not?  I really don’t know, but I do have questions about the science of global warming.  I’d have to say the jury is still out on this one.  It makes a good scare story, and some seem to need a good scare.
