Some of the corn planted on April 11 and 12 has started to emerge here in Southwestern Minnesota. It has been 3 weeks laying in the ground waiting for the warmth that is now here. Very few fields got planted on those cold days, so I do not expect to see many fields up yet.
Most farmers in our area, including myself, got going with their corn planting on the 23 or 24th. We finished planting our corn on the first of May and have had good rainfalls both during and after planting. Since temperatures have been mostly mild, I do not expect our corn to be far behind the earlier planted fields. I’ll be watching to see it emerge.
Many farm folks have finished planting corn here and some have even started to plant soybeans. There are still in evidence many fields, that I expect to be planted to corn, that have not yet been touched. At least one farmer had trouble getting started because of health reasons. Others have day jobs and must plant mainly on weekends and evenings. I would guess this areas corn to be about 75% in the ground.
Our area got between half an inch and 3.5 inches of rain on Tuesday evening to add to the half an inch that fell the week before. For the corn that is in the ground the conditions could not be better. Day time temps are nearing 80 and night-time temps are in the upper 50′s. Just perfect for corn.
We are in the prep stage now for soybean planting. I picked up the seed for the first field yesterday. When things dry out we should be ready.
