60 is quite a milestone in life. I'm now 64 and share with you a similar approach to life and learning. In a little more than 6 months I will start receiving my old age security. I don't feel old except for an arthritic left knee. And in terms of my mental acuity, am convinced that I am as sharp a tack as I have ever been...just once in awhile cannot remember the name of an actor or actress, or a favorite movie. I continue to be a voracious reader...not buying physical books anymore because I have no room to put them anywhere. Now I am borrowing from the library or downloading e-books to read. Keep writing. I believe formulating thoughts on paper whether physical or virtual is the best way to keep the mind young and plastic. I certainly enjoy what you write and appreciate your insights on both life and farming.

The weather you are getting in Southwestern Minnesota is very much consistent with the extreme swings we have experienced here in Southern Ontario. We had snow late in May and a heat wave the following week. When we get rain it is torrential. We had funnel clouds here in the Greater Toronto Area just a few days ago but today is just below 20 Celsius and gloriously sunny.

Hope the weather evens out for you during the rest of the summer. They are predicting a slightly cooler one here.

We have the reverse weather pattern here in Southern Ontario. April was cold and very wet with snow even close to the last day of the month and now May has been dry and sunny continuously for the first 5 days. Every day it is 20 Celsius. Every day the barometer is over 30 inches. Winds are from the southeast, usually a harbinger of weather change but not this year. I actually rolled out the hose today to look at watering the garden in a few spots where the sun exposure has dried out the surface soils to several inches deep. Got to make sure my perennials don't get short changed. In any case in 2 weeks we move from here to an apartment so my gardening days will be diminished to working with planters and pots. Good luck with getting the planting in. I don't envy the position you are in when weather becomes unpredictable. And I expect that is what we are going to see more of in the 21st century as our atmosphere heats up.

The land use challenge posed by urban sprawl requires a new dialogue between cities and the surrounding hinterland. In Toronto a greenbelt has been established by government to impede urban growth into neighbouring farmland. The city's future growth is to come from urban intensification.
