First Frost

This mornings temperature was about 30.  Definitely cold enough to stop the growth of most plants.  With a forecast for even colder temps the next few days and even a chance of snow, the growing season is now over.   Now we need some dry weather to get the crops ready for harvest.

As my bus drove down 17th street this morning I noticed how the Ash trees were dropping their leaves almost like it was raining below them.  I recently found out that it is not the frost that does the damage, but the rapid thawing of frozen plant material as the sun hits it.  That was true this morning as the sun was just hitting those leaves and there was no wind to shake them loose.  I wish I had a camera along.  It was a beautiful sight.
