I’m not much of one to read budgets, especially the US Government’s budget.  Recently I’ve been seeing people complain about how much money is being spent to support corn production.  Here are a few facts from our countries 2009 budget.

  • US government budget of $3,133.2 billion.
  • Social security used $700 billion.
  • Health and Human services used $739 billion
  • The military used $656 billion.
  • The Department of Agriculture had a budget of $100.5 billion.

About one third of the USDA budget goes to the Food Stamp Program.  Only $2.4 billion (2007) is spent to keep our corn farmers producing corn.  Now I admit that is a lot, but put into the perspective of the overall budget, and how important our food system is, is that enough?
