Minnesota Farmer

A field here, a part of a field there

Harvest has started slowly here in southwestern Minnesota.  Soybean fields are being harvested as they mature.  In some cases only part of a field has been harvested because of replants, stressed areas or later maturity beans.  There are still beans in the area that are summer green, but most fields are gold or brown.  Early yield reports are for an average to above average bean harvest.

Some corn fields have also been harvested, but with the good weather not too many are ready to get serious about corn.  Moisture levels are still in the mid to upper 20% level.  So far corn yield reports are not what was hoped for, but still very good.

The weather has turned wet and some fields will need time to dry out.  That will not take too long with the dry conditions we had only a few weeks ago.  The temperatures are a bit cool, but still really nice.

We have not started harvest.  Our earliest beans are for seed and we have to wait until all of the green beans have turned tan.  Green beans are not wanted in seed, so we sometimes have to wait longer to take out seed fields.  I expect to be starting harvest in about two weeks.
