Into every harvest…

Into every harvest repairs and breakdowns must fall.

No rain since the big one almost 3 weeks ago and harvest has progressed very well here in southwestern Minnesota.  There are still wet spots in some areas, I found two more this week, they look like plugged or broken drainage tile.  There is evidence of the hail and wind that came with the rain, we got wind, not much hail.  Machines break down.

Wet soil puts extra stress on machinery.  The wet soil allows wheels to sink in deeper.  Today our big truck’s drive shaft twisted from the stress.  We’re hoping to find a replacement shaft at a local truck salvage yard, if that doesn’t work, a new one must be made.

So far we have the drive shaft, a rock going into the combine and doing some damage, and an auger with messed up flighting.  All challenges that must be overcome.  The combine damage was welded, the drive shaft will be replaced and the auger will have to sit the rest of harvest out.  It’s all part of harvest.

Tomorrow is another day and another harvest challenge.  We’re looking forward to an early finish to harvest.  Harvest is going fast.  More things will break.
