I just spent 10 hours on an off the farm job today, It’s something that farmers do after the harvest. So let’s talk about off farm jobs for day 13 of the 30 day challenge.
Many farmers, especially smaller farmers have other jobs off the farm. I’ve had several, but the one that has lasted the longest is as a school bus driver. Every school day finds me up at 5:30 so I can get a few chores done and get to my bus. The route is over at 8:00 and I can usually get to any farm work I need to do for the day. But there are days like today where I get back from route and get in another bus to take kids to another town for some event, and then come back and sub for a driver that is gone. There are also trips to sporting events and band, choir or academic school trips. It can lead to a long day.
You will find farmers at many off farm jobs. Not all are as flexible as driving school bus. Some work in factories and stores, or have their own business as an owner operator of a trucking line. I have one neighbor that owns a sandblasting and painting business, and another that does machining for high performance tractor pullers. We are a varied lot.
Farmers are not likely to sit idle. You can find us at work many places after the harvest is over.
