Peace and struggle

imagesPeace.  We struggle for peaceful times, we yearn for peaceful times, and yet peace eludes us.

Struggle is the more normal side of life here.  There are the word from “Old Man River” that talk about this struggle.

You an’me, we sweat an’ strain,
Body all achin’ an’ racket wid pain,
Tote dat barge!
Lif’ dat bale!
Git a little drunk
An’ you land in jail.

Ah gits weary
An’ sick of tryin’
Ah’m tired of livin’
An’ skeered of dyin’,
But ol’ man river,
He jes’keeps rolling’ along.

And even old man river struggles.  It may seem placid on the top, but the strength of moving water carries branches and sand with it.  Mountains are being ground down by time and lifted up by volcanic action.  The wind will blow down trees and buildings, it will whip up the waves to destroy beaches.  This is a world of change, of struggle and pain.

I’m enjoying the peace of a cold winter day here in southwestern Minnesota.  It’s Sunday and I have nowhere to be and nothing that needs to be done today, but that will not last.  There are many in this world who struggle to get enough to eat,who are looking for a warm place to sleep or someplace safe to live.  Life is struggle, enjoy the peace if you can find it.

Love that song! My favorite version was by a man in Memphis named James Hyter. I included the audio here if you are interested http://janiceperson.com/general/children/memphis-flood-2011-children-mississippi-river/
